A guide for parents

Looking for an IQ test for your child? Read this first.

Many parents search for an IQ test because they want to know how their child compares, and where to point them next. Here is what is worth knowing before you pay for one: what a real IQ assessment is, who can give one in India, and why online tests and DMIT fall short.

What is a clinical IQ assessment?

A clinical IQ assessment is a standardised test, given one to one by a qualified psychologist, with published norms: your child's answers are compared with those of children the same age who took the same test.

The best-known one for school-age children is the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V). Its publisher, Pearson, lists it for ages 6 to 16 (from 6 years 0 months to 16 years 11 months) and puts its core subtests at about 60 minutes. It gives scores in five areas: verbal comprehension, visual spatial, fluid reasoning, working memory and processing speed. (Pearson, WISC-V)

Pearson sells it only to buyers who meet its Level C: a doctorate in psychology or a related field with training in clinical assessment, a licence to practise in a related field, or membership of a professional body that requires training in assessment. (Pearson, qualifications policy)

A clinical assessment is used to understand specific learning needs. If you are worried about how your child learns, that is the right route, through a registered clinical psychologist.

At what age can a child be assessed?

It depends on the test, and a psychologist will choose the one that fits your child's age. The WISC-V covers ages 6 to 16. For younger children, Pearson publishes a preschool version, the WPPSI-IV, for ages 2 years 6 months to 7 years 7 months. (Pearson, WPPSI-IV)From 16, there is an adult version, the WAIS-IV, which runs to age 90.(Pearson, WAIS-IV)

If your child's school or doctor has raised a concern about learning, ask them whether an assessment would help, and what it should answer.

Are online IQ tests accurate?

Not in the way a clinical assessment is. The tests psychologists use are sold only to qualified professionals, so a free quiz online is not one of them, even when it borrows the name.(Pearson, qualifications policy)

  • Most online IQ tests publish no norms, so the number has nothing real to compare against.
  • Many are free to take, then charge to see the result.
  • No psychologist watches your child take it, or goes through the result with you.
  • A single IQ number says little about the things that matter for what comes next: how a child writes, persuades, imagines and uses AI.

What is DMIT, and is it scientific?

DMIT stands for Dermatoglyphics Multiple Intelligence Test. It scans a child's fingerprints and claims to read their abilities and the careers that suit them from the patterns.

It is not scientific. In September 2019 the Indian Psychiatric Society put out a position statement that denounces DMIT because it is not based on scientific evidence.(Indian Psychiatric Society, 2019)Fingerprint analysis has no scientific basis for measuring ability or predicting careers, so a DMIT report is not a reason to choose a subject, a coaching class or a career.

Who can assess a child in India?

A clinical psychologist registered with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Clinical psychologists are one of the professions on the RCI's Central Rehabilitation Register, and the RCI says only people with a valid, active registration may practise as rehabilitation professionals anywhere in India.(RCI, norms and guidelines)

Before you book, ask for the psychologist's RCI registration number. A title such as "counsellor" or "brain-mapping expert" is not the same as RCI registration.

A more useful question: where does my child stand?

The LevelUp Young Leaders Strengths Profile is free, for ages 8–18. It scores five abilities school doesn't grade: verbal reasoning, logical reasoning, creative thinking, communication, and AI and digital. Not an IQ test, and it says so.

  1. A 30-minute activity at home, set for their age: 8–10, 11–13 or 14–18.
  2. A report: five ability scores against children the same age, with the group and its size named, their strongest ability, the one to grow, and careers that use them.
  3. A one-to-one session with a LevelUp counsellor: what the scores mean and what to do next.
